The regular cucurbit downy mildew scouting program in Norfolk/Elgin and Kent has now wrapped up for the year. While downy mildew has not yet been identified in Ontario, it was confirmed in Berrien County, Michigan earlier this week. From experience we know that once it is identified in one area of the Great Lakes, the other regions are soon to follow. The risk of downy mildew infection for this area is considerable, due to the presence of the disease in the Great Lakes and due to the prolonged wet, overcast weather.
All growers should be using a downy mildew targeted fungicide program at this time.
The 2019 downy mildew scouting program was funded by the Ontario Cucumber Research Committee. In Norfolk, the scouting services are provided by the Norfolk Fruit Growers Association. In Kent County, the program is managed by Tomecek Ag Services.
