The Pest Management Regulatory Agency (PMRA) recently announced the approval of URMULE registrations for SUCCESS 480 SC and ENTRUST 80 W Naturalyte Insect Control Products for suppression of leek moth and thrips on crop group 3-07, bulb vegetables in Canada. Success (spinosad) and Entrust (organic formulation of spinosad) were already labeled on a wide range of fruit, vegetable, ornamental and turf crops for a variety of insect pests.
These minor use registrations target key pests of bulb vegetables in Canada and will help to provide a more robust pest and resistance management strategy. Furthermore, organic producers of the approved crops now have wider access to the Entrust formulation which provides them with a very useful management tool. Please consult with your certification body to ensure that this product is approved for use.
The following table is provided as an abbreviated, general outline only. Users should consult the complete Success and Entrust labels for timing, water volumes and other guidance before using these products.
Crop(s) | Pest(s) | Success (rate product) | Entrust (rate product) | Comments |
Crop group 3-07 (dry onion, garlic, green onion, leeks, chives, shallots, leeks, bunching onion, tree onion, welsh onion) | Leek moth, thrips (suppression) | 218 – 262 mL per ha | 131 – 158 g per ha | Maximum 3 applications per year at 7 to 10 day intervals; Pre-harvest interval of 3 days |
Follow all other precautions and directions for use on the Success and Entrust labels carefully.
Success and Entrust should be used in an integrated pest management program and in rotation with other management strategies to adequately manage resistance.
These minor use projects were sponsored in 2003 by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, Pest Management Centre (AAFC-PMC) as a result of priorities established by growers and extension personnel. We wish to thank researchers and extension personnel in several provinces who contributed efficacy data to support several of these projects. We also wish to acknowledge the personnel of Dow AgroSciences Canada Inc. for their support of this registration and the personnel of the Pest Management Regulatory Agency for evaluating and approving this important pest management tool.
