Crop Updates
Carrots – Carrot weevils are active and laying eggs in early-seeded fields.
Potatoes – Planting is nearing completion with around 90% of the acres planted. If the weather cooperates, most growers are hoping to be finished planting the remaining fields by early-mid next week. For most of the province, any emergence issues will be starting to show. New for 2024 we have updated the Ontario Crop IPM to make it easier for you to identify problems in your crop. Not sure what an issue is? Use the identify tab to scroll and filter through pictures to narrow down any potential problems.
Potato Scout training is next Wednesday with both in-person and virtual spots available.
Weekly plug to participate in our soft rot/blackleg survey: Potato Bacterial Soft Rot Survey – ONvegetables
Rutabaga – The 1st generation of cabbage maggot should at least be emerging now and in some regions damage will be showing up. In addition to Verimark at-planting, for 2024 growers will have 2 other products to use against cabbage maggot. These products are available through Emergency Use Registration and more details on rate, timing, max apps etc. can be found here: Cimegra® and Success® Insecticide labels temporarily expanded via Emergency Use Registration – ONvegetables
