Brassica Vegetables Herbicides Weed Management

Goal 2XL Herbicide for Weed Control on Broccoli, Cabbage and Cauliflower

J. Chaput, OMAFRA, Minor Use Coordinator, Guelph

The Pest Management Regulatory Agency (PMRA) recently announced the approval of a minor use label expansion for GOAL 2XL Herbicide (oxyfluorfen) for control of redroot pigweed and purslane and suppression of lady’s thumb and eastern black nightshade on broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower in Canada. GOAL 2XL herbicide was already labeled for management of weeds on dry bulb onions, strawberries and field conifers in Canada.

This minor use submission was sponsored in 2006 by Agriculture & Agri-Food Canada, Pest Management Centre (AAFC-PMC) in response to minor use priorities identified by producers and extension personnel in Canada.

Weed control is an important component of broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower production and has been identified as a priority by producers for several years. The registration of GOAL 2XL herbicide is an important step towards improving the weed management and resistance management toolkit.

The following is provided as a general outline only. Users should consult the complete label before using GOAL 2XL herbicide.

GOAL 2XL herbicide can be used for control or suppression of labelled weeds on broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower at a rate of 1.13 – 2.0 L per ha applied once pre-transplant (preplant). GOAL 2XL can be applied in a minimum of 200 L water per ha applied after completion of soil preparation but prior to transplanting. Consult the label for specific details about crop injury, soil texture and transplant vigour.

Do not apply GOAL 2XL herbicide to broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower within 60 days of harvest.

GOAL 2XL herbicide should be used in an integrated weed management program and in rotation with other management strategies. Follow all other precautions and directions for use on the GOAL 2XL herbicide label.

We wish to acknowledge the personnel of Dow AgroSciences Canada Inc. for their support of this registration and the personnel of the Pest Management Regulatory Agency for evaluating and approving this important pest management tool.
