Eugenia Banks, OMAFRA Potato Specialist, Guelph

Article updated, July 30, 2012:  OMAFRA Potato Specialist, Eugenia Banks, is now reporting that late blight has not been confirmed in the area of Uxbridge, Ontario, as reported last week.  The report was the result of a misdiagnosis. To date, there are no confirmed reports of late blight in Ontario.

Yesterday, late blight was found in a small tomato field located in the Uxbridge area.
The field has been destroyed.

This is a reminder that despite the hot and dry weather, late blight is around. The disease can develop when weather conditions change and become more favourable for the fungus:

  • temperatures in the 18 C- 25 C range
  • 8 to 12 hours of leaf wetness
