The Pest Management Regulatory Agency (PMRA) recently announced the approval of a minor use label expansion registration for PYROXASULFONE® Herbicide for control of labelled weeds in Canada. PYROXASULFONE® Herbicide was already labeled for management of weeds on a wide range of crops in Canada. These minor use proposals were submitted by Agriculture & Agri-Food Canada, Pest Management Centre (AAFC-PMC) as a joint project with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) IR-4 project as a result of minor use priorities established by growers and extension personnel.

The following is provided as an abbreviated, general outline only. Users should be making disease management decisions within a robust integrated weed management program and should consult the complete label before using PYROXASULFONE® Herbicide.

Crop(s)TargetRate (g/ha)Application InformationPHI (days)
EdamameLabelled Weeds  147 – 285 (dependent on soil type – refer to label)Apply as a pre-plant surface or pre-emergence treatment. Before applying to edamame, verification of Pyroxasulfone 85 WG selectivity on edamame varieties must be confirmed with your local seed company or supplier to avoid potential injury to sensitive varieties. Crop seeds must be planted a minimum 4 cm deep. Do not apply Pyroxasulfone 85 WG if edamame has emerged.  60
Celery (muck soil) Labelled Weeds 240Apply as an early post-transplant (1 to 6 days after transplanting) or as a mid post-transplant application (7 to 15 days after transplanting) to transplanted celery in Muck or Peaty Muck soil (greater than 20% organic matter) for residual control of certain weed species.60

PYROXASULFONE® Herbicide is toxic to aquatic organisms and to non-target terrestrial plants. Observe buffer zones specified under DIRECTIONS FOR USE. The use of this chemical may result in contamination of groundwater particularly in areas where soils are permeable (e.g. sandy soil) and/or the depth to the water table is shallow. To reduce runoff from treated areas into aquatic habitats avoid application to areas with a moderate to steep slope, compacted soil, or clay. Avoid application when heavy rain is forecast. Contamination of aquatic areas as a result of runoff may be reduced by including a vegetative strip between the treated area and the edge of the water body.

Follow all other precautions, restrictions, and directions for use on the PYROXASULFONE® Herbicide label carefully.
