Ranman 400SC Fungicide label expanded via Minor Use Program for control of Pythium diseases on vegetable transplants

J. Chaput, OMAFRA, Minor Use Coordinator, Guelph

The Pest Management Regulatory Agency (PMRA) recently announced the approval of an URMULE registration for RANMAN 400SC FUNGICIDE for control of Pythium damping-off and Pythium root rot on greenhouse transplants of tomato, pepper, cucumber, lettuce and Brassica vegetables in Canada. Pythium is a common disease of greenhouse vegetable transplants and has been increasing in prevalence in some parts of Canada in recent years. The active ingredient cyazofamid was already labelled on potatoes, cucurbits, spinach and carrots for several important diseases.

The minor use project for Pythium on these vegetable transplants was co-sponsored in 2009 and 2010 by the Agriculture & Agri-Food Canada Pest Management Centre (AAFC-PMC) and U.S. IR-4 program as a result of minor use priorities established by growers and extension personnel in both countries. The minor use label expansion for Ranman Fungicide is an important step towards developing an improved pest management toolkit for vegetable transplants for field production in Canada.

The following is provided as a general outline only. Users should consult the complete label before using Ranman Fungicide.

Ranman Fungicide can be used for control of Pythium damping-off and Pythium root rot on greenhouse transplants of tomato, pepper, cucumber, lettuce and Brassica vegetables at a rate of 30 mL per 100 L water applied as a soil drench to the growing medium immediately after seeding.

Do not apply more than 1 time per year and do not apply within 60 days of harvest for tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, Brassica vegetables and 40 days of harvest for lettuce.

Ranman Fungicide should be used in an integrated pest management program and in rotation with other management strategies to adequately manage resistance.

Follow all other precautions and directions for use on the Ranman Fungicide label carefully.

We wish to acknowledge the personnel of ISK Biosciences Corporation for their support of this registration and the personnel of the Pest Management Regulatory Agency for evaluating and approving this important pest management tool.
